The Adult Learning Association of Cape Breton County exists to respond to the learning needs of adults so they may participate more fully at home and in the workplace, thus supporting healthy, sustainable communities.

The Adult Learning Association is committed to Making Learning Possible for Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) residents. We provide free upgrading classes in Glace Bay, New Waterford, Sydney, and North Sydney for adults 19 years of age and over, who have been out of school for at least 1 year. We also offer free family and Seniors’ Literacy Programs.

Upgrading classes follow the Nova Scotia Adult Learning Program, Levels 1 and 2 (grades 1 - 8). Completion of Level 2 can lead to admission to the Level 3 program at the Nova Scotia Community College or to the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board Adult High School. Both daytime and evening classes are available; and there is a choice of full-time and part-time classes. Classes run from September to May, and may be started at any time. Call, email or visit us at the Southend Community Centre, 28 Hillview Avenue, Sydney for more information or to register for a class.
