Policies and Procedures
March, 2006

The Adult Learning Association of Cape Breton County is responsible for the health and safety of its employees/students/volunteers while they are at work/study and will make every effort to provide a healthy and safe work/study environment.

Administrative/instructional staff will be trained and held responsible for ensuring

  • that the instructional staff/students/volunteers under their supervision follow this policy.
  • that staff/students/volunteers use safe work/study practices and receive adequate training to protect their health and safety.
  • the safety of equipment and the facility (ies) at large.

The Board of Directors and administrative staff will cooperate with the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, the Health and Safety Representatives and instructional staff/students/volunteers to create a healthy and safe work/study environment. Cooperation will also be extended to others such as contractors, inspectors, etc.

The instructional staff/students/volunteers of the Adult Learning Association of Cape Breton County will be required to support our Health and Safety Policy and to cooperate with the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, the Health and Safety Representatives and with others exercising authority under the applicable laws.

It is the duty of each employee/student/volunteer to report to their supervisor/instructor, as soon as possible, any hazardous conditions, injury, accident or illness related to the workplace/place of instruction. Also, employees/students/volunteers must protect their own health and safety by complying with applicable laws and by following Adult Learning Association of Cape Breton County policies, procedures, rules and instructions as prescribed.

Where possible, hazards will be eliminated. If that is not possible, and where there is a requirement, safe work practices will be developed, and employees/students/volunteers will be required to use personal protective equipment, clothing, devices and materials.

We recognize the employees’/students’/volunteers’ duty to identify hazards, and support and encourage employees/students/volunteers to play an active role in identifying hazards and to offer suggestions or ideas to improve health and safety.

To ensure this policy continues to meet our needs, the Adult Learning Association of Cape Breton County will ensure it is reviewed by our Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, Health and Safety Representatives and employees at least annually.
